Loredan Gasparini, Venegazzù, Montello e Colli Asolani DOC, Veneto, Italy
2019 | Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc and Malbec
Capo di Stato was a wine created by Gasparini for offical events hosted in Venice by City Council, but it did not yet have that name. Then, at the Gasparini estate during a State Visit, French President Charles De Gaulle publicly praised this wine for being an "excellent Bordeaux". Pleased with the "compliment", Gasparini re-named his wine Capo di Stato, because it was, obviously, "a wine fit for a Head of State".
Made from a blend of old-clone Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc and Malbec, this wine is counted among Italy's finest. From an historic & small appellation 50km north of Venice that has always crafted Bordeaux blends. 50 year old vines.
"Dark, bright ruby red with purple reflections. Rather restrained on the nose, then blackberry and blackcurrant, with some lemon balm and undergrowth on the finish, paired with leathery notes. Very fresh on the palate, with vibrant acidity, clear cherry fruit, grippy tannins that still appear youthful and will mature with further ageing."
- Othmar Kiem, Simon Staffler - Falstaff
